Inner cities in South Africa still face spatial legacy issues and are often characterised by socio-economic inequality, xenophobia and segregation. The Tshwane central business district is no exception, despite being home to large employers such as government departments and educational institutions. Low-income barriers significantly affect communities’ access to healthcare.
Dis-Chem partnered with property development company, Octodec Investments Limited, to open our first inner city community clinic in February 2024. Octodec provided space for the clinic, situated on Thabo Sehume Street in the Tshwane central business district. The Dis-Chem Foundation is running the walk-in clinic. It has consulting rooms, an emergency room and a team of nurses and a receptionist that will help 100–120 people daily.
Consultations with a nurse, including all medical treatments will cost R60 and a consultation with both a nurse and an online doctor R150, including all medical treatments. The clinic will provide appointment-based visits, reducing the need for patients to endure long queues or walk-in visits. Basic medication is available, and the clinic will refer patients who have more severe conditions.
